These Women Are Brave - Igbo Women's Stories

Olikeze Egbunike, women of Biafra
Olikeze Amalunweze Maria Egbunike, 65

Olikeze Egbunike, now 65 years old, was a school teacher in Enugu when the war began in 1967. Below, she recounts of the panic that was created when the first bomb was dropped in Enugu. On that day, she escorted her friend to town.

"I was in Enugu when the shelling started. I told my friend to come to town with me….and on the road, we heard loud sounds: boom, boom, and people were running. We ran too. We couldn't run back to our home. That was in 1967. I knew war had begun. From that fateful day in Enugu, nothing remained the same." More story, >>>.

The Nigerian Civil War also known as the Biafran War raged from 1967 to January 1970. It etched a memory that represented violence and chaos in Nigerian history. The war destroyed lives, it ripped apart the safety nets that held families together. It created a deep bitter rift between different groups in Nigeria. It killed a lot of civilians and for those who survived, the horrific experience had so violently shaken them that they never quite remained the same afterwards. Here is the stories of the Igbo women of Biafra.
