West Africa Review (May 2001)

About the Student

I recently graduated from Binghamton University Cum Laude with Bachelor of Arts (Honors) in Africana Studies in May 2001.

While at Binghamton University I have been a recipient of several local and national scholarships. I was a recipient of the Chancellor's Award for Student Excellence, an Honorable Mention in the USA TODAY All-Academic College Team, Bill and Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship, Faculty-Student Scholarship, Empire Minority Scholarship, Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities, University Union Profession Scholarship, Harpur College Undergraduate Research Award and Rosefsky Language and Culture Scholarship.

I had served as the President of Golden Key International Honour Society, Vice-President of Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society, and also a member of the McNair Scholars Program. In April of 2000, I presented a paper at the New York State Africana Studies Conference of university professors at SUNY Cortland.

I have been invited for poetry performance in the university and the community. I was an invited poet to Performance Weekend, which featured a group of Binghamton University student artists and performers; an invited speaker to a class on "Introduction to World Literature," where I read my poems and answered student's questions on my work; a student poet for Women of Color in Poetry - An Oral Performance and Workshop that featured poet Asha Bandele, Peacemakers Summer Session (youth peace group), and Olivia's Armstrong Poetry Reading Night. My works have appeared in A Prism of Thoughts and Africa Resource Center.

Refugee's going home
These refugees are going home after 30 months of terror. Their lives were never quite the same after the war. Most of them have to start all over again.
